In-between art project, together with Lund University and Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University present a series of projects on the contemporary urban conditions of Bangkok, titled ‘Lak-ka-pid-lak-ka-perd: The Bangkok Invisible Landscapes’ at The Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University and House Rama Theater from 03.11, 2005 until 04.15,2005.

‘Lak-ka-pid, Lak-ka-perd: The Bangkok Invisible Landscapes’ is a group of projects, consisting of art exhibitions, lectures and a screening with the theme of the city of Bangkok as the theme. It aims at illustrating and questioning the transformation of spaces in urban life within Bangkok. After going through the significant changes by the effects of globalization and capitalization in the past decade the organization of the city space has become a crucial mean for the government to re-organize in the Thai society. Needless to say, many factors involve into those changes. The new technological development and means of transportation, the increase number of the foreigners or the free movement of labour force between regions and neighbouring countries, the increased visibility of gay culture in public spaces and so on. These complexities create the additional invisible layers which are placed on the top of the visible conditions of the city. This changes the organization of the space as well as the relationship between the space and its habitants.

Considering the social, political, economical, digital and cultural encounters, a series of projects seek to redefine the emerging and disappearing boundaries using the Thai phrase, ‘Lak-ka-pid, Lak-ka-perd’ (literally translated means ‘sometimes open, sometimes closed’). Beyond the binary perception such as self/other, public/private, inside/outside, center/periphery and digital/analogue, 14 artists and filmmakers, both domestic and international, are listed below, produced work on the Bangkok Invisible Landscapes and presented in the various platform including exhibitions, a short film competition and screening and talks. The series of events begin with the opening lectures by Prof. Sarat Maharaj ( Lund University/ Goldsmith College) and Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda (Director-General of the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Bangkok) from 16:30, 11 th March, before the opening at Center for Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University.
